ACUVUE® PUPIL OPTIMIZED Design: 100% of parameters optimized by both age and refraction vs. <2% for the leading competitor*1

What is PUPIL OPTIMIZED Design?

ACUVUE® PUPIL OPTIMIZED Design was developed specifically for presbyopic patients to help them stay in contact lenses. It is a unique optical design system that takes into account the natural pupil variation that occurs both across the refractive error range and as patients age.1

It is the ONLY technology that uniquely optimizes the optical design to the pupil size according to age and refractive power delivering parameter optimization at 100% vs. less than 2% for the leading competitor.*1

Lens Optical Zone

Why is accounting for pupil size so important?

In contact lenses, only the optical zone portion of the lens is ‘powered’ to help correct a patient’s vision. And only the part of the optical zone that is over the pupil can be used by the eye.1

In multifocal contact lenses, this optical zone contains multiple power zones that are designed to combine to enable presbyopic patients to see both near and far distances.2 And in the case of lenses like ACUVUE® MULTIFOCAL Contact Lenses, to also see everything in-between.3 Therefore, evenly balancing the optical power across this zone is an important factor in providing the best vision.1 Being too small or too big compared to the pupil adversely affects this balance.1

Pupil Size By Age & Refraction

How can we optimize lenses for pupil size?

It’s widely understood that pupil size changes by age. That’s why some manufacturers offer 3 optical designs that differ by ADD. But scientific evidence has shown that pupil size also changes by up to 24% due to refraction alone.4

So to better ensure each patient has the best balance of optical power where they need it – across their pupil – a lens is needed that is optimized by both age and refraction.

ACUVUE® PUPIL OPTIMIZED DESIGN: a game changer

ACUVUE® PUPIL OPTIMIZED DESIGN takes the scientific evidence into consideration so that every single one of our 183 parameters is slightly different, designed to match different pupil sizes and provide the best balance of vision for that refraction.1

In stark contrast, other leading multifocal lens designs only optimize based on age; NOT both age AND refraction.1
Pupil Optimized Design helps ensure optics are in the right size and stay in the right place.

Right size, right shape, right place

Because we want the unique optics to stay over the pupil and optimally retain their properties, we incorporate the PUPIL OPTIMIZED DESIGN with our Hybrid Back Curve Technology.1 Hybrid Back Curve means a combination aspheric/spherical back curve.1 The aspheric center helps to keep the optics in the right shape, and the spherical periphery helps to keep the optics in the right place.1 This additional technology from ACUVUE® supports the integrity of the optimized front surface optics and is designed to provide optimal centration across a broad range of corneal shapes, properly aligning the lens’ optical zone with the pupil.1

Together, the PUPIL OPTIMIZED DESIGN and Hybrid Back Curve help ensure that the ACUVUE® optical zone is the right size, the right shape, and in the right place.1

You do the sphere and ADD, we do the pupil optimized design.

The same simple fit process

ACUVUE® PUPIL OPTIMIZED DESIGN technology works in such a way that you don’t need to manually measure pupil size.1 We’ve built the personalization into the design and fit process so you can fit your patients with ACUVUE® MULTIFOCAL Contact Lenses in 3 easy steps3:

  • Perform a fresh subjective refraction in ambient light
  • Determine ocular dominance using the sensory method
  • Determine the functional ADD

Then enter this information into the simple ACUVUE® MULTIFOCAL Fitting Calculator to achieve over 94% fit success rate in 2 pairs of lenses or less.^3,6

And remember: the same design, parameters, and simple 3 step fit process are available on both daily disposable and reusable options from ACUVUE®, #1 selling contact lens brand in the world.§¶
